For Black History Month (February), the different bands have been celebrating Oscar Peterson (1925-2007), Canada’s greatest jazz musician! During February, students have given presentations, created artwork, perform music, and watched a documentary on this amazing musician. Our largest group project was having the Wind Ensemble record the accompaniment to Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom and then separately record the Chamber Choir singing the lyrics. Due to COVID restrictions and social distancing, the ensembles couldn’t record together. Therefore, the two recordings were then mixed together with the help of our talented sound engineer, Felix Li. The final result can be heard above.
